Fri Dec 29
We were in Tirano, Italy to board to Bernina Express. We ate lunch at Vittoria before boarding. The Bernina Express train was stunning. We zig zagged up and over the mountains of Switzerland for four hours, with a tour guide in our car and an audio guide online, from afternoon until dark.
In Chur, we transferred to a short train to Zurich. By the time we got to our Airbnb it was after 8:00pm and we were hungry. We quickly got ready, then walked to Walliser Kanne for dinner, but they were too crowded to take us. Before we left, though, I made a dinner reservation for the following night. We walked to Brasserie Federal instead and sat right down. We ordered the alpine macaroni and rosti and a couple other traditional Swiss food. The food was great and we stayed for a couple beers after eating.
Sat Dec 30
We grabbed coffee and headed to our tour pickup spot, where we boarded a double decker bus heading for Mount Titlis and Lucerne. The two tour guides chatted about some history and monumental buildings in Zurich as we drove towards the countryside. We made a pit stop along a beautiful lake before arriving at Mount Titlis. We had time to ride the gondolas all the way up, grab a bite to eat, then ride down and join in on the apres ski fun.
On the way back to Zurich, we stopped in Lucerne for about fifty minutes. It was pretty, but I’d bet it looks more beautiful in the daylight.
For dinner we went to Walliser Kanne. It was so good. We shared a classic fondue, veal schnitzel, and beef entrecote. Then we walked it off by visiting the Landesmuseum and the holiday market vendors inside.
Sun Dec 31
We walked to miró manufactura de café for coffee and croissants before Ubering to the Lindt Home of Chocolate. We followed that with the FIFA Museum and lunch at Raffael’s.
Then we rested up for New Year’s Eve. We ate cheese and charcuterie for dinner before walking to Lake Zurich for fireworks.
